Jim is head of global equities at Clark Enterprises, a multi-billion dollar family office that serves the investment needs of the Clark family. Mr. Clark built his wealth, literally, by growing Clark Construction into one of the largest privately held general and civil construction companies in the US as well as an investment holding company, Clark Enterprises, focused on real estate, private equity/venture and financial markets. Jim works with a small team in the Financial Markets Group responsible for liquid and semi-liquid investments across all geographies, markets and strategies. In addition to managing global equities, he undertakes research on all asset classes and strategies with a specific focus on co-investments and alternatives. Currently Jim is spearheading a restructuring of the allocation framework as well as the implementation of new risk and exposure analytics. Jim pursues an intensely fundamental, risk-based approach towards investing seeking to identify positively skewed return probabilities and partner with the best investment talent across the globe in order to compound capital patiently over the long-term.
Prior to Clark, Jim was a Partner and Director at a boutique investment consulting /advisory firm that, at peak, managed $3 billion in assets for small to midsized endowments, foundations and wealthy families. At this role he managed the investment team, developed the research process, directed the investment process, created policy statements, managed client portfolios and co-invested internal pooled funds. He initiated strong performing positions with leading investors in a variety of geographic and strategy areas including long equity, long/short equity, distressed credit, structured credit, global sovereign bonds, private equity, private equity in real assets (including renewables, real estate, timber and oil and gas) and others.
Jim started his career at HSBC Equator, a merchant bank owned by HSBC, Ned Bank and management. At HSBC Equator he worked up through the credit underwriting and risk management group to the investment banking team located in London where he originated, analyzed, structured and negotiated numerous investments/loans including syndicated commodity finance facilities, project finance loans, private equity investments, privatizations and advisory contracts. After HSBC, Jim worked as an independent corporate financier in various new ventures to help structure and arrange growth capital for companies in Emerging Asia and Europe.
