Mark is the founder of Sixth Man Research, an independent strategy firm which serves a broad array of institutional investors and asset allocators. He is recognized as one of the few analysts to correctly forecast the timing and magnitude of the credit crash, the 2008 earnings implosion and consumer recession, the historic bond rally in Q4 of 2008, the bottom of the equity market decline in March of 2009, the end of the global growth paradigm and the sustained outperformance of U.S. stocks in February 2011, the peak of the EU sovereign debt crisis in 2012, and the persistency of low interest rates and nominal growth still present today.
Prior to launching Sixth Man Research in 2007, Mark was Managing Partner of Petros Capital, a long/short equity hedge fund primarily serving university endowments and private foundations. Prior to founding Petros, Mark was a senior associate at Friess (managers of the Brandywine mutual funds) where he was directly responsible for managing $1.5 billion in addition to having oversight
responsibility for the fund’s largest positions which aggregated another $5 billion of the firm’s $15 billion under management.
His career began in 1983 as an equity trader at Goldman Sachs and began managing money in 1990 as a technology and retail specialist for Hamilton, Allen & Associates. Mark graduated from the College of William & Mary in 1983 with a BA in Economics and earned his CFA designation in 1993.
Mark lives on Wilson’s Point in Connecticut with his wife Courtney Downs; he has two children,Graham (28) and Colby (24).
